Qld: Bligh says stem cell vote to be close

Queensland Deputy Premier ANNA BLIGH says she expects a tight vote on laws to allow
therapeutic cloning.

Premier PETER BEATTIE says work's begun on drafting a bill mirroring federal laws passed
last year .. allowing scientists to clone human embryos to extract their stem cells for
research purposes.

Mr BEATTIE says state MPs will get a conscience vote on the bill .. but he'll personally
support it.

Ms BLIGH says she'll also support it .. after scientists convinced her the research
has the potential to unlock cures for a range of serious illnesses.
