DES MOINES, Iowa--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 31, 1996--Microware Systems Corporation (Nasdaq: MWAR), a leading developer of real-time system software, and SystemSoft Corporation (Nasdaq: SYSF), the world's leading supplier of PC Card software, today announced a strategic partnership intended to accelerate the widespread availability of smart consumer electronics products such as Internet appliances and digital television set-top terminals configured to support peripheral devices such as modems or printers.
The Microware/SystemSoft partnership will extend PC Card support to the OS-9 Real-Time Operating System for embedded Internet appliances, wireless communications devices and other embedded systems, as well as to DAVID, Microware's software package for digital TV. The agreement calls for SystemSoft to provide PC Card support for Microware's OS-9 Real-Time Operating System.
"As a result of this accord, many accessories that can be used on a personal computer, such as a modem or hard drive, could be able to be plugged into devices like digital cameras, Internet appliances, digital TV decoders and wireless communications products," explained Mike Burgher, executive vice president at Microware. "We're very pleased to be joining forces with a company the quality of SystemSoft, the firm that helped write the standard for the PC Card interface."
"Our partnership with SystemSoft is a continuation of Microware's strategy to expand the capabilities of smart consumer devices," Burgher added. "By pairing PC Card support with OS-9, and enabling these devices to support peripherals, we're laying the groundwork to enable a wide range of products that will help consumers communicate more effectively. Plus, we're adding the convenience they've come to expect from their desktop communications solutions."
"In 1994, SystemSoft announced support for Microware's DAVID interactive television environment, allowing end-users to easily expand the capabilities of their set-top boxes," said Bob Angelo, president and CEO of SystemSoft. "Today, manufacturers are designing a wide variety of consumer devices that include PC Card slots. By extending our agreement with Microware, SystemSoft provides users of digital TV decoders and next-generation intelligent consumer devices a complete Plug and Play PC Card solution."
The reliability and robust modularity of OS-9 combined with the I/O flexibility and convenience of the PC Card form factor creates a configurable solution for adding applications and peripherals to next generation consumer electronics and communications systems such as cellular phones, pagers, digital cameras, digital set-top boxes and other portable computing devices. SystemSoft software provides the highest levels of compatibility between PC Cards and computing devices.
Burgher noted that, as an example of the types of products this partnership would support, an OS-9-based cell phone user could plug in a scheduler PC Card to check appointments, schedule calls or log phone calls.
