Fed: Howard says Mitsubishi should stay in Australia

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says he will remind Mitsubishi Motors executives of the
benefits of its Australian manufacturing plants when he visits Tokyo.

Reports from Tokyo say Mitsubishi bosses plan to tell Mr HOWARD of their intention
to close its Adelaide-based car plants in 2002.

Due to arrive in Tokyo tomorrow, Mr HOWARD says both the federal and South Australian
governments have already given considerable benefits to Mitsubishi to encourage it to
continue its Australian operations.

He says the automotive manufacturing industry had been a strong advocate of the GST
reforms and have benefitted from the government's industrial relations changes.

However, he says that in the end, the Japanese executives have to make the decisions.
